Production of wines

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, through the General Directorate of Agri-Food Quality and Local Product, has released the production data of differentiated quality wines of the Balearic Islands for 2023. The figures show that “the vintage has had a remarkable grape production and good quality, which allows the sustained increase in the production of local grapes and wine with Designation of Origin and Protected Geographical Indication of recent years to continue,” according to the general director Joan Llabrés.

In detail, in 2023, 2,107.5 hectares of vines were harvested for the production of grapes for the elaboration of wines of differentiated quality -DOP and IGP-. This translates into the fact that the surface area has undergone an increase of 95 hectares, 4.9% more than in 2022. About grape production, this season has exceeded 11,000 tons of grapes: 62% of black grapes and 38% of white grapes.

In addition, grape production also increased by 9.7%, partly due to the increase in vineyard area and the increase in the production of young vines. In this regard, it should be noted that the production per hectare was 5262 kg, 4.5% higher than the previous year.

The grapes produced have also allowed the production of 6.8 million litres of wine, 7.7% more than in 2022, which is a historical maximum for production of wine of differentiated quality of the Balearic Islands. At retail, red wine accounts for 45% of production, white wine 38% and rosé 17%. These data, says Llabrés, “show that the quality wine sector is growing in our islands, it is a product of high added value and with a great future projection”.
