The Balearic Government has received with concern the first information offered by the German government that points to a 20% increase in airline ticket taxes that airlines will have to pay from May onwards for flights departing from national airports. “This is not good news,” said Jaume Bauzà, the Catalan Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, “because any increase in taxes has a direct impact on consumers, particularly German consumers, who are the second most important in our community after the national consumer.

The Government is concerned that this measure will lead to a reduction in the number of routes between Germany and the Balearic Islands, due to a drop in demand in the face of a rise in prices, but does not doubt that “the Balearic Islands will continue to be the tourist reference point that it has always been for German tourists”.

In any case, the Regional Ministry is confident that this draft budget financing law will not continue to be processed, as it is considered that “putting the brakes on tourism activity does not seem to be the best solution to resolve a difficult economic situation”. In this sense, Minister Bauzà will ask the Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, to intercede so that the German government reconsiders its position on this matter.
