Baluard Museu

Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma celebrates its 20th anniversary on January 30, 2024, with various commemorative acts and events. Thus, it will be a year of celebration, of opening the museum to local society, of gratitude to all visitors, users, groups, organizations and professionals who have enjoyed and participated throughout these 20 years of the spaces and the many activities and proposals presented.

Under the slogan “Imagine the future”, we will work to rethink the future of the institution, learning from the past, to make it a friendly, welcoming, diverse and critical space.

The celebration of the 20th anniversary will be organized around three main themes: the institutional event to be held on January 30, the inauguration of the exhibition “In Dialogue: Museum and Collection” followed by a festive celebration, and a program of activities and proposals aimed at all ages and profiles that will take place during the anniversary week (January 30 to February 4).

One of the main lines of work in 2024 will be the opening of the museum to the public. Thus, a program of free guided tours of the Collection exhibition is being launched, which will begin the same week as the anniversary. They will be conducted in Catalan and Spanish, as well as in English.

On the other hand, on the occasion of the anniversary, a special edition has been produced in newspaper format with unpublished illustrations by the artist Pere Joan. There are 20 original colour drawings, one for each year, with no correlative or temporal narrative structure. They are free interpretations of the Museum, the collection, the building and the activity carried out.

“In Dialogue: Museum and Collection”.

Curated by Eva Cifre, head of the Museum’s Education Area, and Soad Houman, head of Registration and Collection, this new reading of Es Baluard’s Collection will occupy two floors of the Museum: Space A on floor 0, and Space C on floor -1.

From a viewpoint rooted in critical thinking and the experience acquired over the last twenty years, the exhibition is conceived as a review and a journey in itself, from two lines of work, differentiated by the spaces but complementary in turn: one of a historiographical nature, which will present the collection itself as a linear or chronological sequence that begins in the late nineteenth century to the present. Another articulated from a more experimental discursive line, in which the works become a metaphor for the definition of “museum” and in particular the terms research and diversity from an educational aspect based on active listening, and the ability of the institution to be porous and permeable to the great current social challenges and new artistic developments, all encouraging the work-individual connection.

In addition, a specific graphic image has been created that can be seen in different urban, advertising, corporate and digital supports during this year.

Along with the exhibition, the artist Tonina Matamalas will carry out an artistic intervention on the building. As a visual story, it will focus on the history of the place, from the Renaissance bastion, the old military barracks, episodes such as the demolition of part of the bastion with lime bombs in 1963 or the beginning of the works of Es Baluard Museu and its inauguration.

20th-anniversary activities

As part of the programming of the 20th anniversary of the Museum, a wide range of proposals aimed at all audiences, in order to include and share with all citizens this moment of celebration. The program of activities will begin on the anniversary day, Tuesday, January 30, 2024, and will cover the whole year. It will have its climax the week of January 30 to February 4 with a series of events that, from various formats both reflective and playful (round tables, lectures, guided tours, concerts and family activities, among others) will address topics ranging from the role of the museum and its mission in today’s society to changes in the museum institution and its projection into the future, in addition to rethinking the space occupied by the museum and its architecture, which is also heritage.
