The Government of the Balearic Islands signed a collaboration agreement this Friday with the Consell Insular de Mallorca, through which the Department of the Sea and Water Cycle transfers to the island institution a sum of 14,296,000 euros to improve the island’s water infrastructures. With the signing of the agreement of the Pact for Water, the Consell Insular has a specific line of aid for the co-financing of actions aimed at guaranteeing the urban water supply to the population.

This collaboration between the Government and the Consell Insular de Mallorca will enable the implementation of several key actions to improve the water supply, including the detection and repair of leaks, the installation of digital meters, the sectorisation of supply networks, the construction or extension of regulation reservoirs and associated infrastructures, as well as other measures to optimise the service.

The president of the regional executive, Margalida Prohens, and the president of the Consell Insular de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, signed the agreement at a ceremony attended by the councillor for the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente; the director general of Water Resources, Joan Calafat, and the councillor for Economic Promotion and Local Development of the Consell, Pilar Amate.

“With this agreement, we are implementing a series of essential measures that will have a positive impact on the quality of life of our citizens, but we need the commitment of all the administrations, especially the local councils of our islands, who are responsible for managing their water networks,” said Prohens during the ceremony.

The agreement involves the transfer of 14.3 million euros from the sustainable tourism tax corresponding to the 2023 Annual Plan. It emphasizes the reduction of losses in the water network and the general improvement of water infrastructures. Prohens pointed out that “the main objective is to reduce the current losses in the water network”. “Today 27% of water is lost, which is too much, an amount we cannot afford. There is a lot of work to be done and our goal is to reduce losses to below 17% by 2027”, she stressed.

Prohens closed her speech by recalling the importance given “in this legislature to the water cycle”: “We are fulfilling and allocating all resources to guarantee the water supply to all citizens and all municipalities in the Balearic Islands”. During her speech, the President of the Government also announced that next Monday the Water Committee and the Climate Change Committee of the agricultural sector will be convened, where the most urgent investments to deal with any drought situations that may arise will be discussed.

The deadline for initiating and executing the works of the Water Pact agreement is from 28 March 2023 to 28 March 2028. A technical and legal accreditation report will be required to determine that the projects presented are eligible for subsidies in accordance with the resolution of the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB).
