After a decade of absence, PortsIB has returned to FITUR 2024, the International Tourism Trade Fair being held in Madrid from today until 28 January. With a stand located in Hall 7 (stand 7B08), within the Balearic Islands space, PortsIB not only reaffirms its role in tourism but also demonstrates its commitment to sustainable and responsible practices.

FITUR 2024

The Councillor for the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, heads the PortsIB Balearic delegation and on his arrival at FITUR he expressed the Council’s intention to find a “balance and make prudent use of coastal resources”. “We are strengthening our focus on environmental sustainability and the promotion of quality nautical tourism. We must focus our efforts on finding a balance and making prudent use of our resources, preserving and valuing our cultural and natural heritage. This must be the reflection of our port management,” he said.

During the event, the minister will take part in various activities, including the presentation of Balearia’s ‘Fast Ferry Margarita Salas’ and the Palma International Boat Show, events that reaffirm the Balearic Islands’ commitment to the nautical industry. “Attending FITUR and similar events is essential to keep up to date with the latest trends in the modernisation and sustainability of ports worldwide. It is an invaluable opportunity to learn from others and apply those lessons in our own management,” Lafuente stressed.

With a record number of visitors in 2023, the port of Ciutadella becomes a clear example of the success and growth that PortsIB seeks to replicate in its management. The port of Son Blanc reached 601,183 users last year, an increase of 22.53% compared to the 490,642 users in 2022. “The remarkable influx of users not only shows a broad operational efficiency but also the ability to attract and satisfy a diverse public,” said Lafuente, referring to the Port of Ciutadella.

Antoni Mercant, director general of Ports and Maritime Transport, underlined, for his part, during the International Tourism Fair, “the importance of nautical sports and recreation”. “It is not only a pillar of our economy, but also an integral part of our identity,” said Mercant. “It attracts enthusiasts from all over the world, reflecting the global appeal of our islands and the quality of our facilities and services. Our commitment to this sector goes beyond economics; it is a commitment to tourism that respects and celebrates our local identity and marine environment,” he acknowledged.

Collaboration with Amadip Esment

PortsIB also shows its social responsibility through its collaboration with Amadip. The organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities has prepared for FITUR 3,000 cardboard fans designed with the PortsIB logo, which are being distributed to attendees, highlighting inclusion and social awareness in their activities.

In addition, PortsIB has taken brochures and guides of the main ports managed by the Autonomous Community to Madrid, as well as promotional items of the destination for the professional public and visitors.
