The study, of which the second part refers only to Europe has been published and whose first part was published in November 2023, also makes clear the commitment of Spanish students to environmental sustainability.

Thus, according to the report’s data, Spain has the highest percentage of students surveyed who say they are proud that their country is a member of the European Union: 95% compared to 91% of the European average.

It is also the country with the second highest value in the European identity index with 57 points, three points above the European average of 54 points. Spanish students are also above average in positive attitudes towards the EU and cooperation between European countries.

The study also shows that students in Spain are the most in favour of reducing electricity consumption (85% compared to the European average of 73%). Words that translate into action, as Spanish students are above the average, with 52 points compared to the European average of 50 points, in terms of the sustainable nature of their behaviour and consumption habits.

It is not surprising, therefore, that Spain leads the group of countries where students show a higher index of support for environmental cooperation among the continent’s territories (53 points compared to 50 for the European average).

In this second module of the ICCS 2022 study, 18 European countries (17 of them from the EU) and two German reference entities (the regions of North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein) participated. In total, some 66,000 students were surveyed, of which 3,500 were Spanish.

The data from this second part of the report complements the first one released in November, whose data showed that Spanish students are among the most committed to equality and the environment, in addition to obtaining an average score in civic competence of 510 points, very similar to the European average (508 points).

This is the third edition of this international study (2009, 2016 and 2022) and the second time that Spain has participated (2009 and 2022). The overall study has been carried out in 22 countries, with 82,000 students, 40,000 teachers and 3,400 management teams. In Spain, in addition to 3,500 students, 1,900 teachers and 160 schools participated.
