Average cultural employment in 2023 shows a 4% increase over 2022

The average cultural employment in 2023 registers an increase of 4% concerning the data for 2022, which means that more than 723,000 people (3.4% of total employment in Spain) worked in the cultural sector last year.

Average cultural employment in 2023

These data have been obtained through an exploitation of the Economically Active Population Survey (EPA), official statistics belonging to the National Statistical Plan prepared by the National Statistics Institute, which the Ministry of Culture carries out and has published today.

This figure has increased by 8.3% since 2020 and already exceeds by 1.8% the figure recorded in 2019 with data before the COVID-19 pandemic. There is also a 4.7% increase from 2021 data.

Significant differences by sex are observed between employment linked to the cultural field and total employment, with a lower proportion of women, 40.2%, compared to the 46.6% observed in total employment.

Cultural employment is characterized by above-average academic training, with a higher rate of higher education than that observed for the country as a whole, 70.2% compared to 46.6%. 68.8% of cultural employment is salaried, a figure lower than that observed for the total (84.9%) and presents full-time and part-time employment rates of 88.9% and 11.1%, respectively.
