The President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Margalida Prohens, together with the Councillor for the Sea and the Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, and the Director General of Water Resources, Joan Calafat, this morning presented the new water-saving campaign. This initiative highlights the Government’s commitment to a more sustainable and conscious management of a resource that is as valuable as it is essential, at a time when concern about water scarcity is becoming increasingly palpable.

“Despite being surrounded by the sea, water is one of our most precious assets, as, due to our climate, the needs of our society and the effects of climate change in the Mediterranean, we are vulnerable to suffering drought situations and, therefore, we must prepare ourselves now to ensure sustainability in water management,” Prohens acknowledged during the event.

“We assume our responsibility as an Administration, but we also call on the public to use water responsibly on our islands. We do so with this campaign, which is included in the framework of the main institutional campaigns carried out by the Government, and in which the main message is to give value to water, a value that we very often do not give it. We want this to be the legislature of water. The Government will provide all the resources necessary to achieve greater use and efficiency in water management, but we also need everyone’s responsibility”, added the President.

Under the slogan “Why don’t you give water the value it has? You will only do so when it is scarce”, the campaign seeks not only to raise public awareness of the importance of water but also to encourage a change in behaviour towards its consumption and management. The image of a tap dripping with olive oil equates the value we place on olive oil with the value we should place on water, underlining its indispensability. The objectives of the campaign are clear: to raise awareness of the critical importance of water, to promote a change in consumption and to encourage the adoption of sustainable practices.

During the presentation ceremony, the video of the water-saving campaign was shown, reinforcing the message and urgency of the initiative. This joint effort by the Govern reflects a step forward towards more conscious and sustainable water management, inviting everyone to value and protect this vital resource for the common good.

With extensive coverage that will include digital platforms, television, radio and press, the campaign has been brought forward given the current situation of concern for this resource and to take advantage of 22 March, World Water Day, as a key moment for raising awareness. This approach aims not only to draw attention to the urgency of taking action to conserve water but also to maximise the campaign’s resonance by coinciding with a date of international significance.

Budget increase

The government has launched an ambitious plan to improve water management, reflected in an 18.3% increase in the budget for the Conselleria del Mar y del Cicle del Agua, reaching 204.8 million euros by 2024. This budgetary boost underlines the Administration’s commitment to what is considered “the water legislature”, marking a decisive period for the implementation of policies and practices aimed at preserving this vital resource.

This approach highlights the need for collective action to complement these measures. The effectiveness of these investments and the achievement of sustainability goals depend on citizen engagement. Every resident and visitor must take an active role in water conservation, adopting more sustainable practices and thus contributing to the success of this common effort.
