The number of employed persons is 4.2% higher than in the first quarter of 2023.

The Islands have also registered the highest active population in the entire historical series in this first quarter of 2024, at 640,000 people.

Balearic Islands recorded the highest employment figure in the first quarter

The employment rate of the population aged 16 and over stood at 51.9%, 0.5 percentage points higher than in the State.

Unemployment also fell compared to the first quarter of last year, from 102,300 to 99,000 unemployed.

According to the Labour Force Survey (EPA) for the first quarter of 2024, the number of people employed in the Balearic Islands stood at 541,000, i.e. 4.2% more than in the same period of the previous year. This is the highest number of employed people in the whole historical series.

By gender, the number of employed men in the first quarter was 292,500 (54.1%) and the number of employed women was 248,600 (46%). The activity rate for men was 66.16%, while for women it was 56.88%.

Employment rate
The LFS indicates that the employment rate of the population aged 16 and over stood at 51.9%, 0.5 percentage points above the State employment rate (51.4%). By sex, the employment rate for women is 47.3%, while the employment rate for men is 56.7%.

Labour force
The Balearic Islands also recorded the largest labour force in the entire historical series in the first quarter of 2024, standing at 640,000 people. This figure represents 5,200 more people than the previous quarter (+0.8%) and 8,600 more (+1.4%) than those registered during the same period in 2023. The increase in the number of active persons is mainly among the female population (+2.4%) above the male population (+0.4%).

Activity rate
The activity rate has also increased in interannual terms, recording a figure of 60.5% in the first quarter of this year, 10.66 percentage points higher than in the same period a year ago and 2.8 points above the Spanish average (58.6%).

Unemployment rate
According to the EPA, the number of unemployed people also fell compared with the first quarter of the previous year, from 102,300 to 99,000 in the first three months of 2024 (-11.8%). Compared with the previous quarter, unemployment rose by 28,300 persons (+39.9%). The survey estimates that 49.1% of the unemployed are men and the remaining 50.9% are women.

Likewise, the unemployment rate decreased by 2.31 percentage points with respect to the first quarter of 2023 (17.8%) and stood at 15.48% in the first quarter of 2024. By sex, the female unemployment rate is 16.9% and the male rate is 14.3%.
