The 40th anniversary of the island’s flag

This Saturday, 27th April, the Consell de Mallorca commemorates the 40th anniversary of the approval of the flag of Mallorca. The institutional act, which will take place in the Sant Marc square of Sineu, will remember the agreement of the plenary session of the 2nd of January 1984 by which the flag of the island was approved.

Specifically, the agreement established that, in accordance with the provisions of point two of article four of the Statute of Autonomy for the Balearic Islands, ‘each island may have its own flag and distinctive symbols, by agreement of the respective Island Council’. Thus, forty years ago it was established that the flag of the island of Mallorca would be ‘the one granted by King Sanç in the Kingdom of Mallorca, in a document of 1312, and traditionally assumed by the Mallorcans as their own ensign’. The description of the flag was the following: ‘a castle embroidered in white or silver on a purple background, at the most immediate part of the flagpole, and four red bars on a yellow background’.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, will preside over the institutional act that will take place this Saturday, 27th April, at 12 noon, which will also include a musical performance and the hoisting of the flag of Mallorca.
