This was announced by President Llorenç Galmés during the general policy debate, where he also announced the purchase of the building of the Hermanitas de los Pobres for 11 million euros.

Next year the Consell de Mallorca will reduce its attendance at 11 national and international tourism fairs, a decrease of 68% compared to 2019, when the institution attended 34 tourism events. Likewise, this year there is also a drop, as the island institution will participate in 24 of the 29 fairs planned. Galmés stated that the island institution “has already begun the transition towards a new model of promotion and positioning of the island in international and national markets”.

In his speech, Llorenç Galmés said that “the main challenge facing Mallorca is to manage tourist flows to combat the saturation that we suffer at certain times of the year”. In this sense, Galmés stressed that the rethinking of Mallorca’s tourism promotion model, the reduction of the ceiling of 430,000 tourist places to 412,000 and the plan to combat illegal supply “are courageous measures, agreed with the sector, and never before adopted, to guarantee coexistence between residents and visitors”.

Purchase of the Hermanitas de los Pobres

In terms of social welfare, President Galmés announced that the Consell de Mallorca has already purchased the building of the Hermanitas de los Pobres, in Palma, for 11 million euros. With this acquisition, Mallorca will have 50 more public residential places, according to Galmés. A building which, he said, will be used for social purposes.

On the other hand, the president of the Consell de Mallorca said that the Puntiró estate, which was acquired in 2018, has been put up for sale, but has never been used as a centre for minors, because it does not meet the requirements. In this regard, she has assured that the Department of Social Welfare is looking for a plot of land or housing to incorporate new places in the child care network.

Sustainable mobility

Throughout his speech, President Llorenç Galmés stressed that “in this first year of its mandate, the Consell de Mallorca has made a clear and decisive commitment to sustainable mobility”. Galmés emphasised that this summer the plan for dissuasive car parks to encourage the use of public transport will be completed. This involves an investment of 20 million euros to build car parks strategically located around bus and train stations in some thirty municipalities on the island.

In addition, the president of the island’s institution pointed out that “thanks to the administrative simplification decree recently approved by the Govern, parking spaces can be made available on rural land for eight months of the year, providing an agile and efficient response to the problems of saturation suffered by some municipalities. This is an essential initiative for the promotion of public transport”.

President Galmés also announced that over the term of office, some twenty civic roads will be built, stretching 50 kilometres across the island, for cyclists and pedestrians. The project will involve an investment of 40 million euros. Galmés detailed that “a civic road is currently under construction between Binissalem and Inca, some 5 kilometres long and with an investment of around 4 million euros”.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca also announced that work will begin in October to reinforce the roadbed on the Cintura road, which will cost 11 million euros.

Opening of Bellpuig

In the cultural sphere, the president of the Consell de Mallorca announced the opening of Bellpuig to the public this summer, “keeping his word”, he said. Last October, the bell was placed in the monastery of Artà, four years after the donation made by the municipality of Os de Balaguer, as a symbol of brotherhood. Explanatory panels have also been drawn up and will be installed in the area.

President Galmés defended the fact that “craftsmanship is a heritage that we also have” to “conserve”. Along these lines, he stated that by the end of the year the Mallorca Crafts Brand will be a reality. A distinctive seal which, according to Galmés, “will protect artisan and traditional products, and which will make the Mallorca brand known throughout the world, as a synonym for quality”.
