“We must act with intelligence and determination to protect our coasts. Each person plays a fundamental role in this task”, says Juan Manuel Lafuente.

The Councillor for the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, today celebrated the recognition of 46 beaches and marinas in the Balearic Islands with the prestigious Blue Flag, awarded by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC). The event, held this afternoon at the Port of Cala Fieguera, was attended by the director general of Ports and Maritime Transport, Antoni Mercant, the manager of PortsIB, Kiko Villalonga; the councillor for Tourism and Beaches of the municipality, Rafael Batle; the president of ADEAC, José Palacios, as well as the mayors and councillors of the award-winning municipalities.

Councillor Lafuente recalled that “this year, 46 beaches and marinas in the Balearic Islands will fly a Blue Flag”, making us the sixth community with the most Blue Flags in 2024, with four more than the previous year. “This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of all those involved, from local administrations to businesses and citizens,” he said.

In his speech, Lafuente stressed the importance of these awards in a context of significant global challenges. “We must act with intelligence and determination to protect our seas. Each person has a fundamental role to play in this task. We have a responsibility to care for, respect, recover and conserve our environment, not only for ourselves, but for future generations who also deserve to enjoy our coasts”, he stressed.

PortsIB has been recognised this year with five Blue Flags, a significant increase on the two obtained in 2023. “These achievements in our port facilities demonstrate once again our commitment to excellence and sustainability”, added Lafuente.

Lafuente concluded his speech by stressing the importance of these awards for improving the quality of the water, the state of the beaches and the services offered on them. “These awards encourage sustainable and responsible tourism in our community. Let us continue to work together to maintain and improve our standards of quality and excellence, ensuring that the Balearic Islands continue to be a benchmark destination,” he concluded.
