This Thursday, the island’s institution and the Montuïri town council signed an agreement to restore and conserve the flour windmill in order to prevent its degradation and open it to the public.

The Consell de Mallorca and the Montuïri Town Council signed a collaboration agreement on Thursday to restore the Can Ferrando flour windmill. The aim of the project is to carry out the architectural restoration of the mill tower, including the cintell, and the construction and installation of the capell and the antenna, as well as the refurbishment of the mill’s surroundings.

The aim is to recover the external aesthetics of the mill and conserve the interior. For the restoration, the finishing materials and constructive solutions characteristic of the traditional typologies or those used at the time will be used, which will allow the physiognomy of the mill not to be altered and, in this way, preserve its integration in the landscape.

The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, explained that “this agreement aims to restore and conserve the mill owned by the Montuïri Town Hall to contribute to its conservation, rehabilitation and enhancement of the property”.

As Roca explained, “We must work to promote the conservation of these heritage elements, which are such an important part of our culture”. He recalled that “once the project is finished, the Can Ferrando mill will open its doors to the public so that it can be visited free of charge and, in this way, raise awareness of the monumental, cultural, historical, artistic, architectural, archaeological and landscape heritage in its territorial area”.

Can Ferrando mill

The Can Ferrando mill is located in Carrer del Molinar and is included in the catalogue of the historical and artistic heritage of Montuïri. It is a 17th-century flour windmill, which was used to grind grain, probably wheat. Typologically, it is a cylindrical tower mill located on top of a small elevation.

This mill is one of the twenty flour windmills registered in the municipality of Montuïri. It is part of what is known as the Molinar de Montuïri, in which we can find a row of eight flour windmills, which formerly numbered ten.
