The executive took part in the RTVE event to celebrate the start of DAB+ broadcasts to cover Mallorca from Alfàbia.

The Balearic Islands are the first autonomous community to offer all three RTVE radio coverage with DAB+ digital technology.

The use of this technology allows for better audio quality, listening to the radio without an Internet connection and without the need to subscribe to any service, and greater stability of reception in its coverage area.

The Govern de les Illes Balears will implement, through DAB+ technology, IB3’s digital radio in the first quarter of 2025. This was announced this Thursday by the director general of Digital Strategy and Administrative Simplification, Xisco Cànovas, at a joint event with Radio Televisión Española (RTVE), in Ca n’Oleo (Palma), to celebrate the start of broadcasts in Mallorca of Radio Nacional, Radio Clásica, Radio 3 and Radio 5 in DAB+, with a transmitter centre located in Alfàbia.

‘We know that public channels can be a catalyst for the transition from analogue to digital. And this transition is an essential element of the Balearic Islands Government’s strategy. An administration that is committed to digitalisation is an administration that is more agile, more efficient, more effective and that adapts to the new times,’ said Cànovas.

The use of DAB+ technology allows for better audio quality, listening to the radio without an Internet connection and without the need to subscribe to any service, and more stable reception within the coverage area. Rich text information about broadcasts and on-air programmes is also displayed.

‘We are pleased to see that we are the first autonomous community in which all three RTVE radio coverage (local, regional and national) will be offered with DAB+ digital technology. And this is the direction in which our actions will be directed. Among them, the start of regional digital radio broadcasts, a great technological advance,’ said the Director General of Digital Strategy.

For his part, the general director of IB3, Albert Salas, said: ‘The announcement by the Government of the Balearic Islands to launch DAB+ broadcasts on IB3 Ràdio is part of the regional broadcaster’s digital strategy. The digitisation of public radio and television in the Balearic Islands is a fundamental part of our project. DAB+ will allow us to improve the quality of transmission and coverage and will place us in a pioneering position in the national radio market’.

Cànovas also announced that the government will put vacant DAB frequencies out to public tender. ‘We will work on this in the last quarter of the year,’ he said. ‘It is necessary to occupy these frequencies in order to provide the radio service with a higher quality for citizens and greater plurality,’ he added.

The event was attended and addressed by the manager of IBDigital, Miquel Cardona; the director of RTVE’s Territorial Centre in the Balearic Islands, Mateu Ramonell; the deputy director general of Planning and Management of the Radio Spectrum, Antonio Fernández-Paniagua; RTVE’s Director of Audiovisual Policies, Public Service and International, Ángel García; the Head of Strategy at RTVE’s Innovation Centre, Javier Sánchez; the Director General of IB3, Albert Salas; Ramón Salat, on behalf of Cellnex Telecom; and José Luis Fernández and Juan Carlos Torralba on behalf of AMETIC and FENITEL, respectively.
