A total of 202 people have benefited from aid intended to compensate farmers for the loss of income resulting from the difficulties of agricultural production in these areas.
The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment, through the Balearic Islands Agricultural and Fisheries Guarantee Fund (FOGAIBA), has recently resolved the 2023 call for applications for aid for compensatory payments for mountain areas in the Balearic Islands. The purpose of this call is to compensate farmers for all or part of the additional costs and loss of income resulting from the difficulties of agricultural production in mountain areas and to avoid natural and social risks arising from their lack of use while maintaining the traditional Balearic landscape as part of its social and natural wealth. It should be remembered, in this regard, that the territorial scope of application of the subsidies is all the eligible disadvantaged mountain areas of the Balearic Islands, which includes the municipalities of Alaró, Andratx, Banyalbufar, Bunyola, Calvià, Campanet, Deià, Escorca, Esporles, Estellencs, Fornalutx, Lloseta, Mancor de la Vall, Pollença, Puigpunyent, Selva, Sóller, Santa Maria del Camí and Valldemossa.

In total, 202 beneficiaries – 154 individuals and 48 legal entities – have received a total of 787,952.29 euros, a subsidy financed 100% by the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. In this sense, this call, whose deadline for submission ended on 30 June 2023, was endowed with 1.3 million euros. “With this new payment, we continue to demonstrate our total involvement with the primary sector of the Balearic Islands and our commitment to resolve the calls for proposals as soon as possible. We do not stop at any time of the year because we are aware of the need to support our farmers and livestock farmers,” said the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, Joan Simonet. “I would like to remind you that the 2024 call for applications closed on 30 April and we are already working to resolve it as quickly as possible,” added Simonet.

Among the obligations and commitments of the beneficiaries, it should be remembered that they have to maintain the agricultural activity at least during the year 2023, except in the case of retirement or force majeure; and maintain the requirements and conditions applicable to the conditions of the farm and the beneficiary during this period, in addition to fulfilling, on their farm, the legal requirements of management, as well as good agricultural and environmental conditions, among others.
