The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation insists on the need for citizens to find out where they want to go, register in the Travellers’ Register and take out insurance before travelling abroad. The #ViajaSeguro campaign, which the Ministry launches every summer, aims to raise awareness of the guidelines necessary before leaving, the requirements of each country and the services that can be called upon in the event of a problem.

Informed and safe travel is the key, and to this end, the Ministry reminds citizens that they have two essential tools at their disposal: the Travel Recommendations and the Travellers’ Register.

Informed travel
The Ministry’s website provides access to the Travel Recommendations, which contain useful information on each country, such as the necessary travel documents, vaccinations and safety conditions. This information is constantly updated with information provided by Spanish embassies. There are also practical recommendations to help travellers who have chosen that country as their destination.

The latest update has been given precisely this weekend for Lebanon, a country to which, given the uncertainty about the possible evolution of the security situation in the south, and given the increasing volatility in the region, it is recommended to avoid travel.

And Spaniards who are there, especially if their stay is temporary, are advised to leave the country using existing commercial means and to be attentive to social networks and other means of communication of the Spanish Embassy in Beirut.

Consular offices
In case of need, Spanish consular offices distributed throughout the five continents attend to any emergency that may arise. Once abroad, all Spanish citizens have the right to make use of the services offered by their consulates within the framework of their competencies: a 24-hour emergency telephone number, emergency assistance to issue laissez-passer and provisional passports, assistance to victims of gender violence and consular protection in general.

The #ViajaSeguro campaign also appeals to the responsibility of travellers, reminding them that, once abroad, they are subject to the rules of the country they are in and must respect them in any case.

Travelling safely
Before going abroad, the Ministry also recommends registering your details in the Travellers’ Register, a completely free tool which, with all the guarantees of confidentiality, makes it easier for the Spanish authorities to locate or contact, if possible, registered Spanish travellers in the event of a serious emergency (natural disaster, armed conflict, etc.).

Finally, the very name of the campaign stresses the importance of always taking out travel insurance to cover possible expenses arising from multiple incidents: from flight cancellations or suspension of transport services in the country of destination, due to various circumstances, to medical care needs arising from health problems or accidents, to hospitalisation or medicalised repatriation.

Having travel insurance facilitates this necessary care which, in certain countries, can also be very costly.
