The Consell de Mallorca opens the half-closed season for quail, wood pigeon and hare in the modalities of greyhounds and falconry

This period coincides with the hunting emergency declared by the Island Hunting Department for the control of pigeons and wood pigeons.

The half-open season opened on Thursday 22nd August, which means that quail and wood pigeon hunting is permitted. Hares may only be hunted using the traditional methods of greyhounds and falconry (which account for 1.5% of hare hunting) and the number of hares hunted per hunter per day is limited to two. However, hare hunting with a shotgun is permitted on two days of the season (18 and 25 August), with a maximum catch of one hare per hunter per day, while collared dove and collared dove may not be hunted during the season.

As an exceptional measure, this year the Consell de Mallorca has declared a temporary hunting emergency to regulate the populations of turtle doves and pigeons given the damage and risks caused by these species on the island, which cause serious economic damage to the island’s agricultural and livestock sectors and population centres.
