President Llorenç Galmés today presented the works to be carried out this autumn, which consist of the reorganisation of two lanes in the direction of Andratx, the construction of a fourth road from the El Molinar roundabout in the direction of Palma and a major improvement of the road surface on the ring road.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, today presented an investment of twelve million euros aimed at improving access to Palma and reducing traffic jams, without using up territory. Four actions will be carried out to decongest traffic on the airport motorway in the direction of Palma and the access to the ring road. The works will be carried out at night, during the autumn, and are scheduled to be finished at the beginning of 2025.

The Consell de Mallorca invests 12 million in improving access to Palma and the ring road from the airport motorway

The two lanes from the airport motorway in the direction of the ring road will be modified. One of them is underused, as it can only be used by vehicles heading towards the Manacor road. With this action, the two lanes will be able to go in the direction of Andratx. A new lane will also be created in the tunnel under the Can Blau roundabout, which now has only two lanes and was becoming a funnel for vehicles coming from the motorway.

Likewise, a fourth lane will be built, taking advantage of the median on the airport motorway, some 800 metres long. This will be in the section that goes from the roundabout at the access to Molinar or Torrent Gros to the entrance to the ring road, to give more fluidity to the traffic that wants to enter Palma. The fourth action consists of reinforcing the ring road, some six kilometres long, which in some stretches will reach as far as Génova.

President Galmés, who was accompanied by the Minister of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructures, Fernando Rubio; the island director of Infrastructures, Rafel Gelabert; and the deputy mayor of Mobility of Palma, Toni Deudero, emphasised the Consell de Mallorca’s firm commitment to improving mobility in the accesses to Palma. These are four actions,’ explained Galmés, ’without land consumption, which aim to tackle traffic congestion on the airport motorway and the access to the ring road, one of the most saturated points of our road network. It will involve an investment of twelve million euros and we hope that they will be finished at the beginning of 2025’.

Galmés added that the four programmed actions represent ‘an update of the reality of our infrastructures, in the points that need it most, and after years without investment for their modernisation’. The president detailed the four actions to be carried out to improve access to the beltway from the airport motorway.

The objective is to improve traffic flow for vehicles travelling on the airport motorway (Ma-19) and wanting to access the ring road (Ma-20) in the direction of Andratx. The ring road has an average daily traffic intensity (IMD) of between 140,000 and 180,000 vehicles in various sections. Joining the Ma-20 from the Ma-19 is a two-lane carriageway, of which the one on the right is underused because it does not join the ring road directly, but is diverted towards the Manacor road (Ma-15) via the Can Blau intersection. This causes traffic jams on the airport motorway that gives access to the ring road.
Another objective of the project is to add a lane to the subway at the Can Blau intersection in the direction of Andratx. This will gain a new lane and will result in three lanes in the direction of Andratx, just like the rest of the ring road. The access to the Palacio de Congresos will also be improved.
The works will be carried out during October and November so that before Christmas the section of the motorway in the direction of Palma will have four lanes from the Gros torrent to the access junction to the ring road. Taking advantage of the median, a new 800-metre-long lane will be created to improve traffic flow.

Finally, a total reinforcement of the road surface will be carried out on the beltway, from the airport motorway to the Valldemossa road junction, which is about six kilometres. New high-quality asphalt will also be laid on the entrance and exit branches up to the Genova tunnel.
