The Directorate General of Housing and Architecture of the Government of the Balearic Islands has proposed the project for the recovery of the emblematic building Es Sindicat de Felanitx, owned by the Consell de Mallorca, as one of the sites eligible for the international architecture competition Europan in its new edition, Europan 18, which is now beginning with a first phase of presentation of locations.

The Government’s Director General of Housing and Architecture, José Francisco Reynés, presented the proposal this Wednesday at the Europan National Committee in Madrid, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda. The proposal was presented in agreement with the Consell de Mallorca, which owns the property and will be a collaborating body if the site is selected.

Once the first phase of presentation of the Europan 18 competition sites has begun, which will be selected in mid-October, the phase of presentation of architectural projects in the locations chosen in this competition in which European architects under the age of 40 participate will follow.

Es Sindicat de Felanitx, a former cooperative winery in Felanitx included in the list of the 100 elements of Spain’s Industrial Heritage, was built between 1919 and 1922.

The Consell de Mallorca declared it an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) with the category of monument. In 2019, the island institution acquired Es Sindicat de Felanitx. The project for the recovery of Es Sindicat de Felanitx, a reference for its typology, style and construction, aims to give this emblematic building a new lease of life.

In previous editions of the Europan competition, the Government’s Directorate General of Housing and Architecture proposed other sites for projects that were selected and subsequently awarded prizes, as is the case of the public housing project in Ca n’Escandell (Eivissa), last year, or, in Mallorca, in previous years, the project for the metro station in Parc Bit, the redevelopment of the Platja de Palma in the S’Arenal area, the housing project on Palma’s seafront or the project for the development of Palma’s seafront promenade.
