The Consell de Mallorca pays homage to King Sancho I in Perpignan

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, and the councillor of the Presidency, Antoni Fuster, took part in the events organised to mark the 700th anniversary of King Sancho I of Mallorca’s death. First, a mass was held in the cathedral of Perpignan, and then President Galmés laid a wreath at the monarch’s tomb. The tribute was attended by the Mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, and the Mayor of Perpignan, Louis Aliot.

President Llorenç Galmés stated, ‘ King Sanho was transcendental for the future of our land and laid the foundations of what Mallorca is today’. Galmés stressed that under the reign of King Sancho the functioning of the Gran i General Consell de Mallorca, the forerunner of the island institution, was improved. ‘King Sancho encouraged the participation of the estates of the Part Forana in the Gran i General Consell, sowing the seed of what is now the Consell de Mallorca, the main institution of self-government of the island that represents all the citizens of our land,’ he said.

On the other hand, President Galmés recalled that ‘it was King Sancho who granted an ensign to the island’s commercial fleet vessels so that they could be distinguished. For centuries, the Mallorcans assumed this flag as their ensign, but it was not until 40 years ago, and thanks to the Statute of Autonomy, that it was officially approved. ‘A flag that unites us and makes us feel proud of our people, our traditions and our history,’ concluded the president.

Throughout the day, the president of the Consell de Mallorca and the rest of the authorities visited the Palace of the Kings of Mallorca, since Perpignan was, together with Palma, the capital of the Kingdom of Mallorca. Later, a conference on the historical figure of King Sancho was given by George Puig, a member of the Municipal Council of Perpignan and president of the Association of Saint Galdric and Saint George, and the introduction was given by Román Piña, president of the Royal Mallorcan Academy of Historical, Genealogical and Heraldic Studies.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, also attended the twinning ceremony between the cities of Palma and Perpignan, which was held in the morning at the Perpignan Town Hall. In this way, the link between the two cities that were the capitals of the former Kingdom of Mallorca is strengthened.
