The Supreme Court admits the Government’s appeal against the Spanish Government’s refusal to convene the Conference of Presidents to be processed

Today, the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court has admitted the appeal of the Government of the Balearic Islands against the inactivity of the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, for not convening the Conference of Presidents. In this way, the judicial process continues and the Supreme Court responds to the appeal filed by the Lawyer’s Office of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands after the authorisation of the Consell de Govern on 26 July.

The arguments the Lawyer’s Office of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands put forward to present the appeal are clear. Article 2 of the Regulations of the Conference of Presidents specifies that the main purpose of this body is to debate the broad guidelines of sectoral and territorial public policies, as well as matters of relevant importance for the State of the autonomous regions. Likewise, Article 4 of the Regulations stipulates that this body shall meet at least twice a year and that it shall be convened by the President of the State Government, who shall do so on his initiative or at the request of the preparatory committee, or the request of ten presidents of autonomous communities and cities with statute.

In this case, it has not been convened since 2022, although fourteen presidents have demanded the convening of the Conference of Presidents of the autonomous communities of the Balearic Islands, Andalusia, Aragon, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castile and Leon, the Community of Madrid, the Community of Valencia, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, the Region of Murcia and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

The admission of the appeal lodged by the Government of the Balearic Islands against the Spanish Government’s refusal to convene the Conference of Presidents follows the admission of the appeals lodged by Aragon, the Region of Murcia, the Community of Valencia, the Community of Madrid and Castile and Leon.
