Public transport helps to reduce pollution, to create friendlier and more cohesive cities and to dedicate more space to pedestrians and bicycles.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has launched an advertising campaign to promote the use of public transport as the backbone of the new daily mobility to help reduce polluting emissions, gain space for pedestrians and bicycles, and create friendlier and more cohesive cities. Transport launches a campaign to promote the use of public transport as the backbone of new daily mobility

The initiative seeks to promote the use of trains and buses to the detriment of private cars due to their multiple advantages for citizens: less time spent on the journey, economic savings, safety, accessibility and reduced emissions… It also allows users to forget about traffic jams and spend their time reading, getting information or chatting.

The message is articulated through a rapper-style video clip which, in an informal tone, with a touch of humour, lists the advantages of using public transport. It is a very choral music video, representing its accessibility to all types of users.

The campaign, which will be broadcast on television, radio, press and social networks under the slogan ‘Public transport, get it?’, is further proof of the Ministry’s and the Government’s strong commitment to public transport as the backbone of the new mobility. In this way, it contributes to promoting sustainable, healthy and safe mobility, dedicating more space to pedestrians and bicycles.

Historic boost to public transport
The Government is making a historic effort to achieve more efficient and accessible public transport and to promote a change in mobility culture. Thus, in 2023 and 2024 it is allocating some 4,000 million euros (around 2,000 million euros per year) to help citizens to opt for this type of mobility. The subsidies have been very significant and have had a great impact on citizens:

Free of charge on Renfe commuter and medium distance services, as well as for intercity bus lines granted by the Ministry of Transport.
A large part of the discount of at least 50% for multi-journey tickets for urban and metropolitan public transport.
Free of charge for all regional and local public transport in the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands.
Verano Joven, so that young people aged between 18 and 30 have been able to travel on public transport in Spain and Europe with discounts of up to 90%.
Maintenance of the traditional subsidies for the Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia Transport Consortiums, as well as for cities with urban public transport systems.
On this point, it should be noted that, according to data published by the INE, 423 million urban and interurban public transport journeys were recorded in July 2024, 8% more than in the same month last year.

Increasing public transport journeys means lower emissions, fewer traffic accidents, greater energy efficiency and less use of public space for private vehicles in favour of citizens and active mobility.
