Operation Crossing the Strait 2024 concludes with record traffic of vehicles

This year, 2024, the operation ran from 13 June to 15 September, a period in which detailed planning was put in place for the weeks and days when the heaviest traffic was expected to prevent any kind of situation that might interfere with the smooth flow of the operation.

In total, 3,442,770 passengers (6.9 per cent more than last year) have crossed the Strait of Gibraltar smoothly and safely in the largest movement of people between the two continents in three months. In addition, Operation Crossing the Strait 2024, coordinated by the Directorate General of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Ministry of the Interior, has recorded a total of 12,012 boat rotations (8.4 per cent more than in 2023).

Operation Crossing the Strait of Gibraltar has been organised since 1986 and manages the transit of Maghrebi citizens travelling from various European countries to North Africa during the summer season. The objective is to make the transit of Maghrebi citizens through the Peninsula smooth and safe. It is the most complex and unique operation that takes place between two continents and which, again this year, has been carried out smoothly and without incident.

Operation Crossing the Straits 2024 has been possible thanks to the extensive arrangements that have worked at full capacity, coordinated by the Directorate General of Civil Protection and the Directorate General of Traffic.

In addition, numerous government agencies have also participated, such as Puertos del Estado and the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy, belonging to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda; the Directorate General of Public Health, of the Ministry of Health, and the Government delegations and sub-delegations where the ports of embarkation are located.
