Director General Fernando Fernández recalls that ‘it is not possible to keep a slaughterhouse running with an average of approximately 1,200 chickens slaughtered per month. We have a serious production problem and any solution for the future involves increasing production.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, through the Directorate General of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development, has convened a meeting this Tuesday with the sector, specifically with a total of six producers, to assess the situation of the Inca slaughterhouse and analyse possible solutions before its closure, scheduled for 1 October.

The director general of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development, Fernando Fernández, recalled that the monthly slaughter volume of the Inca abattoir is very low, a fact that complicates its maintenance. ‘It is not possible to maintain a slaughterhouse in operation with an average of approximately 1,200 chickens slaughtered per month. We have a serious production problem and any solution for the future involves increasing production. Running costs are fixed and are the same if 10,000 chickens a month are slaughtered as if they were 1,000’, emphasises Fernández.

In this sense, during the first eight months of this year, the Inca poultry slaughterhouse slaughtered a total of 9,663 chickens. This is just over 1,200 a month. In other words, one day a week is slaughtered and, therefore, only 300 birds are slaughtered each day the slaughterhouse is open.

It should be remembered that in November 2023, the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment, through the Agricultural and Fisheries Guarantee Fund of the Balearic Islands (FOGAIBA), signed a collaboration protocol with the Inca Town Council and the Pagesa Cooperative for the development and implementation of the project to improve and adapt the poultry slaughterhouse in the municipality, with the aim of maintaining the activity of this facility.

In this sense, it was agreed that Inca Town Council, as owner and holder of the facilities, would commission a technical execution project, which the council itself has assumed the cost of, to update the poultry slaughtering facilities, incorporate the necessary reforms, the execution of a cutting room and a direct point of sale. The project was put out to tender by the Town Council to a company, and in the process of drawing up the new project, the Animal Health and Welfare services of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture and the Public Health Service of the Regional Ministry of Health have monitored it to ensure that it complies with all the regulations in force.
