A total of 12 shops in Maó receive the seal that distinguishes them as Emblematic Balearics

With the addition of these establishments, Maó now has 30 symbolic ones, and is the second municipality in the Balearic Islands with the most distinguished businesses, after Palma. Menorca has 61 listed establishments, including those in Alaior (5), Ciutadella (14), es Mercadal (1) and Ferreries (11), in addition to those in Maó. In the Balearic Islands, 378 emblematic buildings in 32 municipalities can be found on the website www.emblematicsbalears.es.

The Emblemáticos Baleares project, promoted by the Regional Ministry of Enterprise, Employment and Energy through ADR Baleares, aims to make visible and protect the most traditional establishments in the municipalities. In addition, the programme also benefits the rest of the local commercial fabric, as the emblematic establishments act as a driving force to attract visitors from inside and outside the Islands.

The town councils are responsible for identifying the emblematic establishments based on a manual published by ADR Baleares which establishes the different categories. Thus, a shop can be classified as rooted (with a singular trade or product), with history (with more than 75 years of life as a general rule, with exceptions after 50 years of age), and with heritage (with outstanding architectural elements). Establishments that meet these three categories are emblematic.

The shops in Maó that have received the emblematic distinction are:

Argos (bookshop and stationery shop): rooted in history.
Bodegas Ferré (beverages): emblematic
Ca na Magdalena (hardware, bookshop, stationery, drugstore): rooted in history
Ca’s Tix (food): rooted in history
