Susanna Sciacovelli highlighted Mallorca’s efforts to become a responsible tourist destination by promoting the coexistence between residents and tourists.

The island’s Director of Tourism for Demand and Hospitality, Susanna Sciacovelli, took part in the 3rd Capital Congress of the DRV (Hauptstadtkongress 2024), the association of German travel agencies, which is being held on 10 and 11 October in Berlin.


Sciacovelli shared a panel on sustainability and environmental protection with key industry figures such as Thomas Ellerbeck, member of the executive committee of the TUI Group, and Ralf Hieke, co-founder of FAIRWEG. The island director discussed Mallorca’s efforts to become a responsible tourism destination, highlighting initiatives that seek to reduce environmental impact and promote coexistence between residents and the tourism industry. Moderated by climate reporter Louisa Schneider, the panel emphasised the urgent need to transform tourism in ways that adapt to today’s climate challenges without losing sight of the hope and commitment to a more sustainable future.

The DRV is bringing together key figures from politics, the travel industry and tourism in Germany to address the challenges and opportunities for the sector, highlighting the role of sustainability. High-level participants included Dr Marco Buschmann, Federal Minister of Justice, who spoke about cutting red tape, and Dr. Robert Habeck, Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economics, who stressed the importance of climate policies in transforming tourism. Friedrich Merz, President of the CDU and of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group, also gave a keynote speech on international economic competitiveness and the reforms needed to strengthen the sector.


On the business side, in addition to yesterday’s panel discussion between Sciacovelli and Thomas Ellerbeck, Member of the Executive Committee of TUI, Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings and President of the German Aviation Association, Dr. Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings and President of the German Aviation Association, and Dr. Ingo Burmeister, CEO of the German Aviation Association, also took part. Ingo Burmeister, CEO of Dertour Central Europe, Gerald Kassner, owner and managing director of Schauinslandreisen, Markus Orth, managing director of Lufthansa City Center, safety expert Dr Claudia Major, Verena Hubertz, Member of the Bundestag, and Steffi Heinicke of AIDA Cruises, among others.

The Congress, which is taking place on 10 and 11 October, features a full programme of panel discussions revolving around the intensive exchange between the tourism sector and politics. This year, the focus is on changes in German regulations; economic policy and its impact on the sector; current challenges related to climate protection and sustainability; geopolitical uncertainties and the tourism policy of the future. The growing importance of women in tourism will also be discussed.
