The development and activation of this tool will involve an investment of €3,471,074.38 over the next three years.

Co-financing is expected to be provided by the Balearic Islands ERDF Operational Programme.

The Health Service has activated a new computer tool that will make it possible to justify and record doses and optimise ionising radiation for medical use in the Balearic Islands Health Service. The aim is to ensure that radiation is administered in the context of the best clinical indication available in each case and that patients’ personal dosimetric history is considered.

The Health Service activates the OPTIRAD tool to optimise ionising radiation for medical use

The development and activation of this tool will involve an investment of €3,471,074.38 over the next three years.

The OPTIRAD project aims to control citizens’ exposure to ionising radiation in the safest, most effective, and most efficient way, especially in children and at-risk groups.

In this respect, the design of the programmes aimed at dose control, in addition to being corrective, should have an eminently preventive vocation; for this reason, the Health Service is considering introducing specific functionalities in the institutional dose control programme, among which the following are particularly noteworthy:

The adequacy of the prescription of tests and treatments.
The management of the accumulated dose per individual.
The identification of groups at risk of receiving inappropriate doses of radiation.
The justification and documentation of the use of contrasts.
This call is expected to be co-financed by the ERDF Operational Programme 2014-2020 of the Balearic Islands, for which the Health Service can also mobilise funding from programmes with European Regional Development Funds (ERDF).
