The Consell de Mallorca has kicked off the ‘Mental Health in Youth’ programme with a conference on self-esteem by Xisca Buades of Educaclown, Shannon de Jesús of the Official College of Psychology of the Balearic Islands and José Carbonell of the Carbonell Institute. The initiative, made up of nine forums focusing on the emotional well-being of young people, is aimed at the adults who accompany them in their development: family members, teachers, professionals in the fields of health, sports, education, etc.

The Minister of the Presidency, Antoni Fuster, stressed that this is ‘the first time that the Department of Youth has presented a proposal to deal with the mental health of young people with the people who accompany them in their day-to-day lives’. He also celebrated ‘the great reception of the programme, as in just a few days from the opening of the registration period, the capacity was full, a fact that demonstrates the interest of Mallorcans in learning about the challenges faced by young people and how to deal with them’.

The room set up by the Medical Association of the Balearic Islands has 120 places and the island institution has set up a waiting list due to the high demand. Fuster has encouraged participation in the following conferences ‘which deal with essential issues such as cybersecurity, bullying or limits in education’.

In this first conference, psychologist Shannon de Jesús spoke from her own experience, since ‘working in secondary schools I see their concerns on a daily basis’. Therapist Xisca Buades stressed that ‘although adolescence can be a turbulent time, it is important to stop seeing it as a feared period and start looking at it with the same enthusiasm as childhood’. Psychiatrist José Carbonell also analysed the consequences of self-esteem problems and the development of anxiety, mood and eating disorders.
