The Consell de Mallorca, in collaboration with UN Tourism, is holding this week the III Sustainable Destinations Summit at the Hotel Zoetry Mallorca, which started yesterday with a great success of attendance.

The second day was opened by the Conseller of Tourism of the Consell de Mallorca, José Marcial Rodríguez Díaz, who during his speech highlighted the efforts being made by his department to promote a real coexistence between residents and tourists, encouraging responsible tourism among all visitors and within a framework of sustainable development of tourism.

Along these lines, Rodríguez stated that from day one ‘at the Consell de Mallorca we have been committed to and staged a policy of maximum respect for coexistence, which is our main purpose and mission’.

For all these reasons, ‘we cannot make the wrong enemy in tourism, we must find the balance between the temporary resident and the permanent resident, between feeling visited and not invaded’, the Minister of Tourism stressed to the more than 250 people attending the second day of the summit.

Experts and opinion leaders from the tourism and related sectors have debated during these days in Mallorca experiences, opinions and projects that, although from different fields, have a common goal: that tourism is an element of cohesion, coexistence and equitable sustainable progress.
The conference opened with an inspiring presentation on ‘Mallorca – The Island of Tomorrow’, where the vision for the future of the island as a benchmark for sustainable tourism worldwide was discussed.
The panel ‘Elements of successful action frameworks’ analysed the successful action frameworks that are key to progress in the transition towards sustainability. These frameworks play a fundamental role in catalysing significant impacts, essential to making the sector more sustainable and resilient.
Under the title ‘Managing environmental insights’, the use of solid data and environmental DNA, among other lesser-known sources of environmental information, but increasingly accessible and recognised for their value in the design and management of sustainable processes and products in destinations and companies, was discussed shortly afterwards.

The day continued with ‘The interplay of effective national and subnational cooperation advancing sustainability’. At this point of the debate, public policies were analysed, which are fundamental not only for the public goods on which the tourism sector depends but also for defining the roles and responsibilities that influence the effectiveness and success of actions.
The last panel was entitled ‘Speaking about sustainability from the heart’ and brought two intense days to a close. The debate: how to talk about sustainability from the entities responsible for managing tourism in some of the most important destinations in the world.
