The main interventions have been necessary in Menorca to alleviate the effects of the DANA on Abaqua’s purification systems.

The Government has earmarked more than 118,000 euros to improve the affected infrastructures.

The Consell de Govern has been informed of the actions carried out by the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (Abaqua) to repair breakdowns that have occurred in various sewage and purification facilities on the Balearic Islands. These emergency actions were essential to prevent uncontrolled discharges of wastewater into the environment and to guarantee the optimal functioning of the affected facilities.

Emergency actions in the sewerage and treatment facilities over the last two months

Among the most important interventions was the repair of the impulsion pipe that connects the Port of Andratx with the Andratx wastewater treatment plant. The breakdown, which occurred on 9th August, required immediate intervention by the company FACSA. This action was completed in a short period to avoid affecting the service, at a final cost of 17,118.91 euros (VAT included). Likewise, on 13 August, a leak was detected in the Canyamel pipe, which was also repaired as an emergency by the company Melchor Mascaró, at 26,818.24 euros (VAT included).

In addition, emergency works have been carried out at several wastewater treatment plants in Menorca, specifically in Alaior, Cala en Porter, Es Mercadal and Addaia, which were affected by the effects of the DANA that hit the island during August. These facilities suffered significant damage that required rapid action to prevent further damage, with an estimated budget of 75,000 euros, paid for by Sociedad General de Aguas de Barcelona, S.A.U.

These repairs are part of the emergency management that the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency carries out on an ongoing basis to guarantee the optimal functioning of critical sewerage infrastructures in the Balearic Islands. Thanks to these interventions, it has been possible to prevent breakdowns from having a greater impact on the environment, ensuring the protection of natural resources and the continuity of the essential purification service.
