Four diplomas in Palliative Care are created for healthcare professionals

The Regional Ministry of Health, through the Directorate General for Health Research, Training and Accreditation, will process the accreditation of new diplomas in Palliative Care.

These diplomas will certify the training and level of training in palliative care for four health professions: doctors, nurses, psychologists and physiotherapists.

As stated in the new Order, ‘the aim is to improve the quality of healthcare received by citizens by improving the training of health professionals, aligning it with their daily healthcare activity’. It also ‘provides legal certainty, increases patient safety and improves professional skills’.

One of the admission requirements is to accredit professional practice in units, hospitals or home palliative care support teams recognised by the competent autonomous community or authorised palliative care units, in addition to other criteria.

By consensus between autonomous communities, it was agreed that the resolution that will open the application period in each community will be published at the beginning of October 2024.

Currently, patients requiring palliative care are cared for by different healthcare professionals both in healthcare centres and at home. Due to the growing need for this care; the complexity, severity and specificity of the pathologies; and the procedures used in this area of competence, and to guarantee the quality and safety of care, the creation of the Diploma of Accreditation in the Functional Area of Palliative Care (DAP) has been favoured, as provided for in Royal Decree 639/2015, of 10 July.
