The Regional Ministry of Education and Universities will build a new nursery and primary school in Capdepera

The regional secretary for Educational Development, Mateu Suñer; the manager of the Balearic Institute of Educational Infrastructures of the Balearic Islands (IBISEC), Marco Alarcón, and technicians from this body met today with representatives of the school, families and the Capdepera Town Council to present the results of the latest report issued by IBISEC on the state of the S’Alzinar school.

It should be remembered that CEIP S’Alzinar is made up of two different blocks, block A (built-in 2005) and Block B (built in 1979). Block B has had serious structural pathologies for years, especially in the porticoes, caused mainly by the lowering of the foundations of the three pillars that make it up, due to the geotechnical characteristics of the subsoil (clay) and the water run-off that forms. The building has been closed to the public since 2021.

At the same time, at the beginning of September 2024, the Capdepera Town Council expressed its concern about the appearance of several cracks in block A, for which the students were relocated to modular classrooms.

Given the evidence that the geotechnical characteristics of the subsoil cause significant damage to the educational structure, the Conselleria d’Educació i Universitats has decided to build a new CEIP in the municipality and classify this work as a priority. The reinforcement project for the closed building is already finished and will soon be put out to tender. The construction period for this new centre is 5 months.

On the other hand, and concerning the 11 modular classrooms currently available, the Conselleria intends to make a structural reinforcement in the building that is now closed so that students can teach there during the months that the construction of the new building lasts.

Educació has already informed the Capdepera Town Council of the need for a plot of land, away from Carrer de les Dones de Llata, where the CEIP s’Alzinar is located, for the construction of the new school.

At the meeting held today at the school, the regional secretary for Educational Development, Mateu Suñer, and the manager of IBISEC, Marco Alarcón, presented the latest report to the educational community of Capdepera and answered any questions about it.
