Casal Solleric collaborates with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in the organisation of Peter Halley’s first show in Spain since 1992
This is the first Halley retrospective in Spain in the last 32 years. The last institutional proposal within the institutional sphere of the American artist in our country took place in 1992, at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
The exhibition, curated by Guillermo Solana, artistic director of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, comprises a total of twenty paintings from various Spanish private and public collections. Halley himself was responsible for designing the installation plan and for selecting the works.
At 71 years of age, Peter Halley is considered one of the great contemporary artists on the current creative scene. His emergence on the painting scene from 1980 onwards contributed to rectifying the tradition of abstract-geometric art in the 20th century, which until then had been dominated by idealist and formalist conceptions.
His compositions anticipate the society of the digital age through the use of fluorescent colours that evoke the energy of electronic screens. Critics consider Halley to be one of the boldest and most experimental colourists of our time.
Halley’s work has always been very well received in Spain, where he exhibited for the first time almost 40 years ago, taking part in a group show centred on New York scenes organised by the Fundación Caja de Pensiones de Madrid.
Subsequently, in 1992, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía presented a retrospective of Halley’s work, which had previously been shown in various European museums. It was then that the artist began to exhibit his creations in various Spanish cultural venues.
The works that form part of the exhibition organised by the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza with the collaboration of the Casal Solleric are twenty large-format paintings that cover Halley’s entire artistic career, from 1985 to 2024, a circumstance that allows us to see the evolution of his proposals.
Among the creations that make up this retrospective are ‘Cárcel’ (1985), ‘Comercio de pieles’ (1994), ‘Eduntainment’, ‘Apagón’ (both from 2005) and ‘Gravedad’ (2006).
As for more recent works, the exhibition will include ‘Mágico a medias’ (2018), ‘Clemencia’ (2019) and ‘La nota alta’ (2020).
