The Consell de Mallorca obtains 20.1 million euros of European funds for the construction of the Llucmajor composting plant
The island’s institution has been granted this European contribution once the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, through the Sectoral Conference on the Environment, has accepted the request of the Ministry of Enterprise, Employment and Energy of the Government of the Balearic Islands, to approve an allocation of 14.2 million for the implementation of several phases of this infrastructure.
It should also be noted that this financial allocation is in addition to another 5.9 million euros that the island institution has already received from Brussels for the implementation of the strategic project for Mallorca.
20.1 million from European Union funds for the construction of the new treatment plant, which is expected to cost 30 million euros. Thus, the execution of these funds will cover around 65% of the estimated cost of the infrastructure, which will have the capacity to treat up to 21,000 tonnes of organic fraction per year.
The second vice-president and councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, highlighted ‘the opportunity that these funds represent for Mallorca’, given that, according to him, ‘they will make it possible to cover a very significant part of the estimated cost of this action, which is so necessary for our island’.
The Consell de Mallorca and the company that holds the concession for the public waste management service in Mallorca, TIRME, have formalised the contract that will enable the construction of a composting plant to get underway.
The new composting plant is consolidated as a strategic infrastructure that will improve the management of the island’s waste, specifically the organic fraction. In addition to the commitment to composting, the aim is to decentralise this service so that the treatment of the FORM is carried out closer to the points of production. In this way, transport and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere are reduced.
The Consell de Mallorca declared the public works for the construction of the Llucmajor composting plant, also considered a strategic project by the Government of the CAIB, to be of general interest.
