The Consell de Mallorca launches guided tours of the Centre Cultural La Misericòrdia
The Consell de Mallorca wishes to make the history of La Misericòrdia known to all citizens. The Vice President and Councillor explained this for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, who stressed that ‘for the past year and a half, we have been working to turn this emblematic building of the city into a cultural centre that is fully operational and to bring culture to all audiences, young, old and young at heart. Now we are taking another step forward with organising these guided tours to make the history of La Misericòrdia known to all who wish to discover it.
Roca added that ‘La Misericòrdia forms part of Mallorca’s cultural heritage for many reasons, including its long history as the largest civil building in Palma, founded in 1565 by the Jesuits as a charity house. For this reason, a one-hour tour has been prepared to provide the public with all the details of its history, as well as its architecture and most characteristic uses. Visitors will also see the six areas that can be enjoyed today, including the recently restored cistern’.
Contents of the visits
These tours will reveal the history of the Centre Cultural La Misericòrdia, which began as a hospice and now houses some of Palma’s most important cultural facilities, such as the Biblioteca de Cultura Artesana (Artisan Culture Library) and the Mallorca Sound and Image Archive.
This tour will take you on a journey back to its origins, analysing its architecture and the different uses and functions the building has had over time. In addition, six current areas will be visited: the chapel, the multi-purpose building, the Sound and Image Archive, the Artisan Culture Library, the Lluís Alemany Library, the Botanical Garden and the recently refurbished cistern.
The guided tours will take place with prior registration at the following link: https://bit.ly/4fge4zL. Each tour will last one hour and will have a capacity for 30 people.
