The event brought together breast milk donor and recipient families to highlight the importance of breast milk in the development of premature babies.

The Son Llàtzer University Hospital commemorated World Premature Babies Day at an event held in the Family Room of the Neonatal Unit. The event, organised in collaboration with the Blood and Tissue Bank Foundation of the Balearic Islands, brought together breast milk donor families and recipient families to raise the profile of prematurity and highlight the importance of breast milk in the development of premature babies.

This year’s theme, ‘Right of access to quality care’, highlights the need for all premature babies to receive breastmilk as part of essential care.

Breastmilk is a primary resource, and in cases where the mother is unable to produce breastmilk, milk from the Mother’s Milk Bank becomes the timely alternative. In 2023 there were 1,685 births at the Hospital, 103 of which were premature and, among these, 21 received breast milk from the Bank, while in 2022 there were 144 premature births, 20 of which benefited from donated milk.

This year, Son Llàtzer and the Mother’s Milk Bank have joined the statewide campaign to promote breast milk donation, supported by the Initiative for the Humanisation of Birth and Breastfeeding Care (IHAN), the RICORS research network and the Spanish Association of Human Milk Banks (AEBLH).

According to the Blood and Tissue Bank Foundation, 458.53 litres of breast milk were donated in the Balearic Islands in 2023 thanks to the generosity of 79 donors, 77 of whom were new donors that year. The average amount donated per mother was 5.8 litres, a figure that demonstrates the commitment and solidarity of the Balearic community with the babies who need it most.

The event, which brought together breast milk donor families and recipient families, created a space for meeting and recognition for mothers who, by donating their milk, contribute to the health and well-being of premature babies.
