Under the slogan ‘Male violence starts earlier than you think. Stop it, the aim is to raise awareness against the normalisation of violent or abusive behaviour.

25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The President of the Government of the Balearic Islands has presented the institutional campaign to raise awareness among young people about violence against women on the occasion of 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Through the Balearic Women’s Institute (IBDONA), the Government has launched a campaign in the media and social networks, aimed at the younger public, against a series of abusive behaviours that can be the origin of male violence. With the slogan ‘Gender violence starts sooner than you think. Stop it, the campaign includes real interviews with young people, recently recorded on the University of the Balearic Islands campus in Palma.

The president explained that this campaign has clear protagonists: young people. ‘Because they, more than anyone else, who have been educated in the values of equality and respect for women, must be the main protagonists in the fight against male violence, as the new generations are the ones who must lead the changes in our society, and it is by the hand of these new generations that we will be able to eradicate all forms of male violence shortly,’ she said.

The campaign aims to convey that machismo is present in everyday life and that, given that many young people have witnessed macho behaviour in their environment, it is necessary to fight to ensure that it is not normalised. 87% of teenagers have witnessed male violence and 23% of young people believe that it does not exist. These shocking data from Fad Juventud’s Youth and Gender Barometer 2023 are reflected in the campaign to raise public awareness of the seriousness of the phenomenon.

On the occasion of 25N, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, this year the Government, through IBDONA, has organised a programme of activities under the title ‘Respect, equality and human rights. Enough violence against women’.

Prohens stressed that the Government will continue to work for equality and in the fight against male violence, through IBDONA – which is once again increasing its budget for 2025 – and also calls for the involvement of all administrations.
