The central act of the 25N has consisted of a floral offering and the reading of the names of the murdered women since official records have been kept.

The Consell de Mallorca has held a solemn act in Raixa to honour the memory of the 39 women murdered in Mallorca since official records began. In this way, the insular institution joins the demands of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The island’s Director of Families, Ana Ferriol, read out the names of the victims, followed by a minute’s silence. The memorial was accompanied by the musical pieces of the duo Almasola.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, expressed the deep sadness caused by these irreparable losses and pointed out that the 39 women, along with a minor who was also a victim of this violence, ‘represent the cruelest face of a scourge that is still present in our society’. Llorenç Galmés stated that in the face of this situation ‘we say loud and clear that in Mallorca we want a land free of violence, an egalitarian society, where women are not afraid’.

The president highlighted the efforts made by the Consell in this legislature to strengthen the resources allocated to the care of victims. Among the measures highlighted, he pointed out the expansion of the Aurora programme, which has increased the number of places available, and the forthcoming opening of the Centre Libertas, the first crisis centre for victims of sexual violence in Mallorca, which will offer comprehensive care 24 hours a day. Galmés stressed that these actions demonstrate that ‘the commitment to victims is firm and unquestionable’.

The president made a wreath on behalf of the institution in front of the main monolith of the memorial, which was inaugurated last year. The event was also joined by representatives of other institutions, reinforcing the collective commitment to the fight against gender violence.
