The insular institution has concluded the training dedicated to advising technicians and those responsible for urban planning, maintenance and social services throughout the island.
Providing all the town councils of Mallorca with the necessary tools to guarantee universal accessibility on the island is the final objective of the training that the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS) concluded this Friday. The aim is for technicians and managers in the areas of town planning, maintenance and municipal social services to be able to know, understand and interpret the technical legislation in force so that public spaces and services throughout Mallorca are accessible to everyone.

IMAS concludes the universal accessibility workshops aimed at breaking down physical, sensory and cognitive barriers
The island’s director of people with disabilities, Maria Francesca Rigo Amengual, closed the last of the training sessions at Parc Bit, which were attended by some forty representatives of the island’s municipalities and architectural technicians from the Consell de Mallorca, ‘this training has been a demonstration of IMAS’s firm will to achieve a barrier-free Mallorca. The administrations have to set an example and, for this reason, we must guarantee universal accessibility to all our spaces, services and information.
‘We have set up a new office for universal accessibility, to provide advice on this matter to all those who request it. In addition to guiding and monitoring all municipal accessibility plans, this office will be responsible for ensuring that the regulations are complied with in all cases. The aim is to ensure that no one feels restricted on our island,’ concluded Rigo.
The training, given by Aspaym professionals, consisted of a total of fifteen hours, spread over three five-hour days, on the last Fridays of September, October and November. During these days, in addition to the legal part on accessibility and non-discrimination for the access and use of urbanised public spaces, specific and real cases have been reviewed, which the participating technicians have been able to present in their municipalities. These cases were reviewed in a joint and participative manner, and proposals for improvement were made.
In addition to these face-to-face sessions, the IMAS has made available to the technicians and municipal managers a consultation manual on accessibility in public spaces, designed in digital format and which establishes conditions, requirements and solutions, so that any person can carry out the activities of daily life as independently as possible.
Within this Office for Universal Accessibility, IMAS also has a specific advisory and technical consultancy service on universal accessibility for buildings and private homes. Any person or entity can request an appointment or information through the web page www.imasmallorca.net
