The Consell de Mallorca organises the first Meeting of Archivists of the island to create a network of collaboration between municipal archives
In 2024, the island institution has earmarked a total of 180,596 euros for the conservation, digitisation and dissemination of more than 20 municipal archives in Mallorca. Specifically, this has been done through two lines of subsidies: one for digitisation and organisation, through which 91,650 euros have been granted, and another for investment, which has reached the municipalities with 88,946 euros.
The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, stressed during the meeting that the municipal archives ‘carry out essential work in order to know the history of the municipalities and have it well documented’. According to Roca, the Consell de Mallorca is working to provide technical support to town councils and help them to keep up to date through subsidies and other resources, with the aim of guaranteeing the conservation, digitalisation and dissemination of documentary heritage.
The meeting was attended by some thirty archives, and was complemented by a three-day intensive course on documentary and archival management, given by renowned professionals such as Juan Miguel Álvarez Martínez, chief archivist of Felanitx, and Maria Magdalena Nieto Cerdà, chief archivist of Llucmajor. This practical training dealt with subjects such as the ordering, valuation and selection of documents, as well as the use of auxiliary research tools.
It should be noted that this year the Consell de Mallorca also organised the joint exhibition ‘A stroll through our archives’, a project which, according to the vice-president, was ‘a great success’ and helped to raise the profile of these valuable resources for Mallorca’s historical documentation.
Antònia Roca visited the archivists attending the meeting and stressed the importance of sharing their work in order to connect the municipal archives, which until now have worked in a dispersed manner: ‘We believe it is very important to share problems in order to find joint solutions and create a network between municipalities,’ she said.
With this initiative, the Consell de Mallorca reaffirms its commitment to the preservation and promotion of the island’s cultural heritage and to supporting the municipalities so that they can carry out their work with the necessary resources.
