The thermal insulation of the Can Planes Museum and the tourist and commercial axis of the municipality will be boosted with European funds
The Department of Tourism of the Consell de Mallorca has signed two agreements with the Sa Pobla Town Hall for the execution of two tourism projects for 1.01 million euros. Specifically, these are the actions ‘Thermal insulation of the Museu de Can Planes’, integrated within the framework of the Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destination (PSTD) within the 2022 call, and the ‘Drafting and management of the project to improve the urban environment with sustainability and green criteria of the tourist and commercial axis of Sa Pobla’, integrated in the PSTD call of 2023.
These initiatives are part of the global project Mallorca Living Sustainable Hub, parts II and III of the PSTD call, which consists of various actions with a total awarded amount of 13.4 million euros to be carried out with local entities and is coordinated by the Consell de Mallorca through the island’s Directorate of Tourism for Governance and Sustainability, headed by Pedro Mas.

Consell de Mallorca signs two agreements with Sa Pobla
The first of the actions has a budget of 500,000 euros and aims to improve Can Planes, a unique municipal building in Sa Pobla, and the project will involve sustainable rehabilitation to adapt it to climate change: it will be provided with thermal insulation on the façade, roof and closures. In addition, the aim is to improve the green and sustainable transition of the building, the creation of a tourist information office and the enhancement of the richness of the local heritage in order to make the most of it for tourism.
On the other hand, the second of the agreements to be signed has a budget of 510,000 euros and will seek to promote a better positioning of the town and the growth of tourism in the area under criteria of responsibility, sustainability and quality through the tourist and commercial axis of Sa Pobla. This action aims to improve connectivity between the market square with the historical, cultural and gastronomic centre of the municipality and, in short, the places of tourist interest. It will also seek to recover and conserve the heritage, traditions and set of values that define the identity of the municipality.
The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, said during the signing ceremony that ‘these two agreements are a sign of our commitment to our municipalities and sustainability strategies. On the one hand, with the actions at the Museu de Can Planes¸ we are not only adding value to the richness of the local heritage but also reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency by promoting a tourist office. On the other hand, with the tourist and commercial axis we rethink public spaces to make them more accessible, attractive and adapted to today’s needs, both for residents and visitors. With these actions, we are turning Sa Pobla’s tourist and commercial axis into a benchmark of quality and sustainability, boosting local economic activity and strengthening the municipality’s social fabric’.
For his part, island director Pedro Mas expressed his satisfaction with the signing of these agreements and said that ‘since the beginning of the legislature we have been committed to highlighting everything that the municipalities of Mallorca do, and our goal is to help them, because by listening to and understanding the needs of the town councils we can make progress in achieving common tourism goals’.
The Consell earmarks almost 1.5 million euros for Sa Pobla for 2024 and 2025
The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, has met with the mayor of Sa Pobla, Biel Ferragut, along with the councillor of Economic Promotion and Local Development, Pilar Amate, and other members of the local corporation. This meeting is part of President Galmés’ series of visits to see the needs and problems of the island’s municipalities first-hand.
In this regard, the president of the island institution highlighted that the Consell has granted Sa Pobla an amount of 106,400 euros within the Action Plan for Sustainable Energy and Climate (PAESC) for 2024-2025 and a total of 520,000 euros from the Works and Services Plan (POS) and 303,216 euros to improve and create new sports facilities for 2024-2025. The municipality is also entitled to a further 417,614 euros from the Water Cycle Agreement for 2024. On the other hand, this year the island’s Department of Economic Promotion and Product of Mallorca has granted the municipality of Sa Pobla subsidies totalling 116,000 euros for three projects aimed at promoting and disseminating the product of Mallorca: ‘IX Fira de l’arrós pobler’, ‘Fira Sa Pobla Coenta’ and ‘Fira nocturna de la patata 2024’ (potato night fair 2024). To this must be added another 7,650 euros in subsidies for the town council to carry out research projects on the commercialisation of the local product. All in all, the Consell will allocate almost 1.5 million euros to sa Pobla for the years 2024 and 2025. According to President Galmés, this aid ‘demonstrates the island institution’s firm commitment to municipalism during this legislature’.
