The Consell de Mallorca’s goal is to preserve the cultural landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana and foster a more resilient environment in the face of environmental risks.
The Serra de Tramuntana Consortium, which reports to the Consell de Mallorca’s Department of the Presidency, will have a budget of 1.8 million euros from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) to develop a preventive forest restoration project. This initiative, which forms part of the Ordinary Annual Plan 2024-2025, aims to conserve the cultural landscape of the Serra, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and to strengthen its resilience to risks such as fires, pests and extreme weather phenomena. This was announced by the president of the Consell de Tramuntana, Llorenç Galmés, at the Serra de Tramuntana Mayors’ Committee.

The Serra de Tramuntana Consortium will have 1.8 million euros at its disposal for forest clean-up at the ITS’s expense
The budget, which will be distributed in three annual instalments, foresees an investment of 242,000 euros in 2025, 726,000 euros in 2026 and 862,125 euros in 2027. This project will focus on improving forest ecosystems through specific interventions, such as clearing undergrowth in forest-urban interface areas to minimise the risk of fires, the creation of defence strips on strategic roads to contain possible fires and facilitate their extinction, and the removal of fallen trees or trees affected by pests to preserve biodiversity. In addition, preventive forestry measures will be applied in critical areas to reduce the density of vegetation and prevent the spread of fires. The project also includes continuous monitoring to assess the environmental and socio-economic impact of the actions and to guarantee the sustainability of the efforts made.
The President of the Consell de Mallorca underscored that the conservation of the Serra de Tramuntana is an absolute priority, not only for its environmental, cultural and heritage value but also for its importance as a driver of sustainable tourism and the local economy. Galmés stressed that this project, financed with ITS resources, reaffirms the Consell’s commitment to protecting the Serra and ensuring the safety of residents and visitors.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the project aims to promote sustainable use of forest resources such as biomass production.
