Various presentations by specialists and workshops were held to update the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and other cognitive disorders within the framework of geriatrics.
Joan Simonet, director general of Benefits, Pharmacy and Consumer Affairs, accompanied by Soledad Gallardo, managing director of Son Llàtzer Hospital, Ana Espino, coordinator of the Balearic Islands Neurodegenerative Disease Strategy, and María Castro, director general of Dependency Care, today inaugurated the 5th Conference of the Balearic Islands Neurodegenerative Disease Strategy at Son Llàtzer Hospital.

The 5th Conference of the Balearic Neurodegenerative Diseases Strategy focuses on the care of those affected
The conference, which aims to focus on the current situation of care for people affected by neurodegenerative diseases, is part of the dissemination and training activities of the health strategies. It is mainly aimed at medical and nursing professionals in primary care, hospitals and social and health care, physiotherapists, speech therapists, social workers, nutritionists, psychologists and occupational therapists in the Balearic Islands who are interested in continuing education on neurodegenerative diseases.
It was also aimed at all the professionals of the administrations in the field of social services and benefits involved in the care of these patients and their families, as well as at people interested in or affected by neurodegenerative diseases, especially those linked to patient and family associations.
During the conference, Ana Espino Ibáñez, coordinator of the Balearic Islands Neurodegenerative Diseases Strategy, analysed the current situation of the Strategy for Neurodegenerative Diseases, both at regional level and in the National Health System.
In addition, the focus was placed on the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and other cognitive disorders in the framework of geriatrics, as well as on the approach to social determinants in the consultation, with a presentation by Pedro Gil Gregorio, head of the Geriatrics Service of the Hospital Clínico Universitario San Carlos, in Madrid.
Different initiatives to facilitate the care of people affected by neurodegenerative diseases were also presented, as well as the first-person experience of a caregiver of a person with dementia.
