The main demand is to adapt the software to ensure that both official languages can be used in courts and tribunals.

The institutions and organisations involved in the campaign have signed a letter addressed to the Secretary of State for Justice, Manuel Olmedo Palacios, to highlight the fact that, despite the rights recognised and the wishes expressed, the citizens of the Balearic Islands continue to face serious difficulties in exercising their linguistic rights in the field of justice.

One of the main difficulties is that the computer software of the Administration of Justice does not incorporate models of documents in Catalan, which makes it difficult for professionals to use Catalan on a regular basis in proceedings.

Campaign ‘Justice, also in Catalan’.
The letter sent a few days ago, was signed by all the representatives of the institutions and entities that form part of the campaign ‘Justice, also in Catalan’. This is a proposal launched in 2021 with the aim of encouraging people who wish to do so to use the language of the Balearic Islands in courts and tribunals.

These institutions and entities are the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands, the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Territorial Management of the Ministry of Justice, the Bar Association, the Bar Association, the Bar Association, the Association of Social Graduates, the Notary Association, the Dean’s Office of the Property, Mercantile and Movable Property Registrars of the Balearic Islands, the University of the Balearic Islands and Obra Cultural Balear.

Demand for technological changes
In the letter, two technological improvements have been demanded so that the computer programs allow documents to be drawn up in a bilingual Catalan-Spanish format, as well as enabling a field with the option of choosing the language of the procedure and of the notification in order to obtain indicators of linguistic use and to be able to monitor their evolution.

A meeting has also been requested with the Secretary of State for Justice to discuss the different issues in depth.
