The special surveillance, regulation and road safety measures of the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) will begin at 15:00 hours on Friday 20 December and will last until midnight on Monday 6 January.
The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is launching tomorrow, Friday 20 at 15:00 the special operation planned to cover the 20.1 million road journeys planned for the Christmas holidays, which will end at midnight on Monday 6 January 2025.
As usual, different phases of the special operation have been set up to coincide with the main Christmas festivities:
1st phase, Christmas: Friday 20 to Wednesday 25 December. During this first period, 6.7 million journeys are expected to be made.
2nd phase, New Year’s Eve: Friday 27 December to Wednesday 1 January.
3rd phase, Epiphany: Friday 3 to Monday 6 January 2025, when the special Christmas arrangements will end.

Traffic forecasts more than 20 million journeys this Christmas
Expected journeys
Many of the journeys, both long and short-distance, especially at weekends and on public holidays, will be to second homes, mountain areas for winter sports, winter and Christmas tourist attractions and shopping areas.
Means and measures
To cover all these journeys, the DGT has prepared a special operation that includes regulation, organisation and surveillance measures to guarantee mobility and fluidity on the roads and, at the same time, ensure road safety.
To this end, the DGT has the maximum availability of its human resources (Agents of the Traffic Grouping of the Guardia Civil, civil servants from the Traffic Management Centres, helicopter patrols and personnel in charge of equipment maintenance and the installation of roadside measures) which, among other functions, will be responsible for:
Facilitating traffic mobility and fluidity, as well as ensuring Road Safety on the roads.
In addition, in order to facilitate traffic flow in the most conflictive areas, reversible and additional lanes will be installed by means of signage, beacons and cones at peak traffic times, and alternative routes will be established.
Likewise, road works will be halted, sporting events and other events which involve the occupation of the road will be limited and the circulation of goods lorries in general and those transporting certain goods will be restricted on certain stretches, dates and at certain times.

Maintain road safety conditions for all types of vehicles on roads with sections or areas affected by adverse weather conditions such as snow, ice, fog, rain and wind.
To help users in the event of any incident or unforeseen event that may arise during the journey, as well as to monitor the correct behaviour of users on the road with the human and technical resources available to the organisation: fixed and mobile speed cameras, as well as helicopters, drones, cameras and camouflaged vans to control the use of mobile phones and seat belts.
