The project, which began a month ago, aims to improve the bay’s marine biodiversity by removing 1,375.5 metres of fibre cement piping and other obsolete materials.
A month ago, work began on the removal of the old underwater outfall of the Eivissa WWTP, a key project to improve sustainability and marine biodiversity in Talamanca Bay. The initiative includes the removal of 1,375.5 metres of fibre cement pipe, an obsolete and disused material, which is settled on the seabed at depths of up to 40 metres.
The removal is being carried out in a controlled manner by dismantling in 6-metre sections, refloating with floatation balloons and transport to collection areas designated by the port authority, where the waste is managed in a differentiated and responsible manner. The operation also includes the removal of accessory elements such as 800 sacks of cement used as anchors and 225 reinforced concrete ballasts.

Progress on the removal of the old Talamanca outfall pipe
The planned execution period is five months and is organised in such a way as to prioritise environmental protection, especially the conservation of the Posidonia oceanica meadows. To guarantee safety, the fibre cement is being handled under strict protocols and by specialised companies.
The councillor for the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente; the director general of Water Resources, Joan Calafat; the manager of Abaqua, Emeterio Moles, and Jordi Grivé, the fourth deputy mayor and councillor for the Environment of Ibiza Town Council, visited the works this week to assess first-hand the progress of the work in progress.
Efforts are currently concentrating on the underwater work, where the dismantling and grouping of materials is being carried out, separating the fibre cement from the inert waste. The work is progressing at a good pace, with the logical incidences derived from the state of the sea, which for the moment have not had a significant effect, and it is expected to be completed before the 2025 tourist season.
This project reflects the commitment of the Government of the Balearic Islands and Ibiza Town Council to sustainability and the conservation of marine resources, integrating responsible practices in all stages of execution and with the aim of improving the biodiversity of the bay.
