Interior reinforces preventive anti-terrorist measures during the Christmas season

Following the meeting, the Ministry of the Interior has decided to maintain Level 4 activation of the Anti-Terrorism Prevention, Protection and Response Plan, as well as the reinforcement measures agreed in October 2023, and to strengthen the police arrangements planned to guarantee the security of the usual events and journeys that attract a large number of citizens during this festive period.

The reinforcement measures, set out in an instruction issued this Friday by the Secretary of State for Security, Rafael Pérez, will be maintained throughout the national territory between 00:00 hours on 21 December and until 15:00 hours on 8 January 2025.

This ‘especially intense’ police reinforcement during the Christmas season, which includes random checks of vehicles and people, will ensure the surveillance and protection of places, spaces and means of transport, as well as religious, leisure and recreational events in general, where there are high concentrations of people at this time of year.

Likewise, all the measures envisaged in Level 4 of the Anti-Terrorism Prevention, Protection and Response Plan will be intensified to provide security for large centres, infrastructures and transport interchanges, as well as air, sea and land transport facilities and means of transport that are used by a large number of people and have a high level of traffic at this time of year.

Police collaboration
The Government Delegations in the Autonomous Communities that have their police forces or attached National Police units will urgently pass on this instruction to the regional authorities and will call, if necessary, the necessary information and coordination meetings to implement the measures put in place.

In addition, the Secretary of State for Security has sent this instruction to the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) to be distributed among the heads of local police forces and thus incorporate their operational capabilities to the Christmas reinforcement plan.

The Central Private Security Unit of the National Police will also communicate these instructions to private security companies so that they can reinforce the services, procedures and collaboration measures corresponding to the current anti-terrorist activation level.
