Social Security pays 10.3 million pensions to 9.3 million pensioners in December

The retirement pension is the main benefit for 6.4 million people who will see their pensions revalued by 2.8% in general terms.

The Social Security paid 10,281,477 pensions to 9.3 million people in the December payroll, which amounted to 12,974.2 million euros.

On Monday 23 December, the Council of Ministers approved the revaluation of pensions, which will come into effect on 1 January. The increase will be 2.8%, in general, by the average CPI between December 2023 and November 2024, in the application of the Law on Guaranteeing the Purchasing Power of Pensions approved in 2021. For their part, minimum pensions will rise by 6% in 2025. This percentage will be higher for pensions with a dependent spouse and widows‘ and widowers’ pensions with family responsibilities, which will increase by 9.1%. Non-contributory pensions will be revalued by 9%.

This measure will apply to the 6.5 million retirement pensions and 2.4 million widow’s and widower’s pensions in the Social Security system, as well as to permanent disability pensions (995,503), orphan’s pensions (339,837) and pensions in favour of family members (46,312).

The revaluation will also be applied to the 721,275 pensions of the Pensioners’ Pension Scheme (mainly civil servants).

The number of pensioners in December was 9.3 million, who will see their pensions revalued. Of these, 4.7 million are men and 4.6 million are women.

The revaluation will mean an additional 600 euros per year for people with an average retirement pension, while the average pension in the system will increase by around 500 euros per year. In this way, their purchasing power is guaranteed to be maintained.

Average pensions
The average pension in the Social Security system is 1,261.9 euros this month, 5.3% more than in the same month last year. This average includes the amount of the different types of pension (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphan’s, orphan’s and in favour of family members). The average retirement pension, which is received by more than two-thirds of all pensioners (6.4 million people), stands at 1,449.9 euros per month.

By schemes, the average retirement pension from the General Scheme is 1,607.4 euros per month, while in the Special Scheme for Self-Employed Workers, it is 967.4 euros. In the Coal Mining sector, the average pension is 2,812.2 euros, and 1,605.4 euros in the Sea Scheme. The monthly amount of new pension registrations in the system amounted to an average of 1,548.5 euros in November, according to the latest available data.

As for the average widow’s or widower’s pension, it reached 899.3 euros per month in December.
