The full plan can be consulted on the DGT website in the ‘special operations’ section.

Since the start of the special Christmas traffic operation on Friday 20 December at 15.00 hours, 44 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents.

To prevent further suffering, it is essential to take into account a series of recommendations known to almost the entire population and apply them rigorously when driving, especially at a time when adverse weather conditions can occur and celebrations with family and friends increase.

Pay attention to the traffic in this winter season, being informed of the weather conditions and carrying the essential elements to drive if they are adverse.

Be extremely cautious on short and night-time journeys, even if they are well known.
Refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages or taking other drugs if you have to drive.
Fasten seat belts or secure children correctly in child restraint systems. Every year more than a hundred people die because they were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Change in the weather
According to the AEMET, there will be a change in the weather, with the arrival of rain in the north and west of the peninsula. In addition, on 5 and 6 January rainfall could be heavy in Galicia and around the Central System. Temperatures will also rise and frosts will gradually ease.

On occasions, adverse weather phenomena can affect traffic, and for this reason and during the winter season, the DGT provides citizens with a section on the website where advice is given on how to drive in ice, fog, rain, wind or snow.
