The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, through the Forest Health Service of the Directorate General for the Natural Environment and Forest Management, has published the guide Fauna Auxiliary per al control de plagues Forestals (Auxiliary fauna for the control of forest pests). The publication, presented by the councillor Joan Simonet and the director general Anna Torres, explains how different species of birds and bats present in the Balearic Islands act as controllers of forest pests, such as the pine processionary or the hairy oak caterpillar. The main aim of the guide is to raise public awareness of the importance of these species and the key role they play in controlling forest pests throughout the archipelago.

The publication includes fourteen fact sheets, corresponding to different species of birds and bats. Each one, in addition to the species, specifies the habitat and the nest box (birds) or shelter box (bats) that it may occupy. It also offers a section explaining how individuals can build the different nest boxes and shelter boxes, with recommendations for their placement.

It should be noted that the guide has been financed with the sustainable tourism tax (ITS) through the project ‘Forest health 3.0: Use of new technologies applied to forest modelling and phytosanitary improvement of forest masses’. The script was written by Cristina Fiol and David García, experts in birds and bats, while the illustrations and design were created by illustrator and naturalist Xavier Canyelles.
